OTTAWA – Canadians say they are willing to give volunteer firefighters a tax break even it costs the federal government millions of dollars.
A poll commissioned by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs and conducted by Abacus Data found 69% of Canadians support giving volunteer firefighters a $3,000 tax credit. The plan, if accepted by Parliament, would mean the average volunteer firefighter would get a tax refund of $450 for providing 200 hours of service to their communities per year.
